Background

On February 19, 1998 two dignitaries met to sign the Memorandum of Agreement establishing the American Studies Resource Center (ASRC). Greta N. Morris, Counselor for Public Affairs, United States Information Service, American Embassy, Manila and Emily M. Marohombsar, President, Mindanao State University, Marawi City agreed to co-sponsor the establishment of American Studies Resource Center (ASRC) in Marawi City to be hosted by the Mindanao State University.

The Center was formally opened on July 20, 1998 with initial collection of 200 titles both print and non-print information sources on a wide range of topics related to American life and culture with Ambassador Thomas C. Hubbard as guest. Today, it is now known as the American Corner- a learning partnership between the American Embassy and the University.

Our Mission

Consonant with the mission of MSU, the AC aims to play a vital role in forging peace and sustainable development in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) by providing up-to-date information sources, resource sharing and expertise.

Our Objectives : The AC aims to

  • Provide resources for study and research about the U.S.;
  • Serve as a solid information support to the American Studies Program of the University;
  • be a venue for dynamic participation in the various cultural programs.

Our services

1. Access to the Collection

  • Books are organized according to the Library of Congress Classification Scheme.
  • Open shelf system is followed.
  • Materials are for Room Use Only (a photocopier is available in the Center for reproduction of materials.)
  • Validated ID of MSU faculty members, students and special permit issued by other libraries are handed to the librarian in-charge upon entry.

2. Lending services

  • Borrowing privileges are granted only to MSU faculty members who are making syllabus in American Studies and students upon request of their faculty member that such is to be reviewed. Journals and magazines are for room use only.

3. Internet Service

  • Internet connection is available at the American Corner. Use of Internet is strictly for research related to American studies only.

4. Datatabase access

  • EBSCOhost- online database containing full text, comprehensive indexes and abstracts of foreign professional journals.

5. Document delivery

6. Video/Film showing service is available upon request of faculty member for his class.

The Center is open to the following:

  • Faculty members, students and regular staff member of MSU Main and MSU System Colleges.
  • Client from Marawi City and Central Mindanao region whether public or private workers.
