Gen. Dela Rosa’s MSU Visit as Commencement Speaker: A Nostalgic Homecoming to What Once his Field of Dreams

by Rebekah M. Alawi

Contrary to Wolfe’s claim that “you can’t go home again”, Gen. Ronald “Bato” M. Dela Rosa, PNP Chief, did come home to MSU last January 25, 2017. As he himself capped his Commencement Address with: “One never really leaves”.

The occasion was the 52nd Commencement Exercises for the First Semester, AY 2016-2017 which saw some 1119 candidates for graduation going onstage for their prized diplomas. It was a long awaited homecoming for the top cop of the country who first came to MSU in the late 1970s and stayed for three years until PMA scholarship lured him to another “ magic mountain” – Baguio – to pursue his dream to become a soldier. That was thirty-five years or so ago.

MSU System conducts curricular conference for IT education and computer-related courses

by Prof. Janice F. Wade, Faculty, CIT

In line with the goal of the Mindanao State University System to prime itself for integration into the ASEAN community and commit its efforts to the implementation of the K to 12 curriculum, a three-day conference dubbed “MSU System-Wide Curricular Conference on IT Education/Computer Related Program Offerings” was organized. MSU-IIT took the lead role and MSU-General Santos City hosted the conference.

There were a series of lecture/input conducted topped by Policies, Standards and Guidelines on IT Education given by Prof. Alquine Roy Taculin of MSU-IIT. Prof. Taculin tackled the issues that need to be taken into account for the different curricular programs that must adhere to the standards set by CHED toward becoming a Center-of-Development (COD) or a Center-of-Excellence (COE) for any given program offering.

Dr. Cenie Vilele-Malabanan (MSU-IIT) gave a lecture on Outcomes-Based Education (OBE) which explained the importance of having an OBEdize curriculum in the different curricular programs especially in Computer Science, Information Technology, and Information Systems. She also discussed the implications of Asean Integration for the various IT education programs in the Philippines.

Dr. Gaudencio Petalcorin (MSU-IIT) lectured on Integration of General Education in the MSU Curricula. He explained what general courses in the CS/IT programs will be going down to Senior High and the required general courses to be included in the revised curriculum as stipulated under CHED CMO Series 2014. He aslo explained that the courses mandated by the university that are also part of the required general courses can be lumped as one.

The last speaker was Prof. Renato V. Crisostomo (MSU-IIT) who lectured on the Landscape of IT Education. Prof. Crisostomo explained the different directions of the different computing programs such as Computer Science(CS),Information Technology(IT), Information Systems (IS). He further explained that all programs are important and that as to Research Project of students such as Thesis for CS and Capstone Project for IT/IS weigh equally important. That is, there is no “superiority complex“ between a Thesis over a Capstone Project, nor can it be said that a Capstone Project is inferior to a Thesis.

The three-day conference was participated by faculty members coming from the different campuses of MSU System. From MSU Marawi Campus, nine faculty members attended, namely, Julieto E. Perez, Janice F. Wade, Mudzna M. Asakil, Jasmin Jeanette Mama, Jogie A. Vistal, Anna Rose S. Daniot, Jofil A. Israel, Llewelyn A. Elcana, and Joseph C. Sieras.

The delegates were welcomed by Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Mary Lynn S. Abiera, Ph.D. and Chancellor Abdurrahman T. Canacan of MSU-General Santos at the AVR of the Graduate School of MSU-General Santos City, Downtown Campus.

MSU Main Campus conducts Senior High School echo training-seminar

by Dr. Johara D. Alangca-Azis, Special Assistant, OVCAAUniversity

To enhance the senior high school teachers’ capability towards effective implementation of the K-12 enhanced basic education program (EBEP) and to give every student an opportunity to acquire quality education based on enhanced and decongested curriculum that meets international standards, the MSU Main Campus conducted a three-day echo training-seminar on Senior High School (SHS) Curriculum Content and Strategies for SHS Teachers with the theme “Capacitating SHS Teachers Towards Enhancing the Quality of Basic Education in the Philippines.” The training was attended by all the Deans, Asst. Deans, Chairperson and faculty members directly involved in the SHS implementation, namely, the College of Education, CSPEAR, CNSM, CHARM, CSSH, Engineering Technology, CBA, College of Fisheries, College of Agriculture, CIT, among others. Said training aimed to develop a curriculum that is rational and focused on excellence in order to produce a pool of highly qualified and trained teachers for the SHS curriculum. SHS covers the last two years of the K to 12 program, specifically Grades 11 and 12, where students will go through a core curriculum and subjects under a track of their choice.

Most of the speakers were faculty members of MSU Main Campus who were sent by the University Leadership to attend the Senior High School Training at Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST), Cagayan de Oro City on May 29-June1, 2016, namely, Prof. Melbar M. Angri, MSU-UTC Principal and SHS Asst. Director (SHS Curriculum); Dr. Johara D. Alangca-Azis, OVCAA Special Assistant (Policy Guidelines on Daily Lesson Preparation for the K to 12 Basic Education Program); Prof. Arnold Asotigue, OVPAA Special Assistant (Classroom Assessment and Grading System); Prof. Cesar Delfinado, Faculty, Filipino Department (Learner Centeredness); Prof. Jeffry Montejar, Faculty, CIT, (21st Century Learning); Dr. Montia D. Sarip, Dean, College of Education (Differentiated Instruction and Other Learning Strategies); and Prof. Nurhayna Eryll Madali, Faculty, College of Education (Outcomes-Based Education in SHS Curriculum).

It must be noted that, SHS, as part of the K to 12 Basic Curriculum, was developed in line with the curriculum of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the governing body for college and university education in the Philippines. This ensures that by the time the student graduate from SHS, they will have the standard knowledge skills and competencies needed to go to college or become a part of a workforce which meets the average skills-set required by the industry.

For the efficient implementation of the SHS program, the following officers were elected for SY 2016-2017, namely, Dr. Shamseda A. Tabao, Director; Prof. Melba M. Angni, Asst. Director, Mr. Arthur Palagawad, Registrar; Prof. Amenoding Limpao, HUMSS Chairperson; Prof. Anna Mitos J. Dizon, ABM Chairperson; Prof. Husna A. Dimalapao, STEM; Prof. Michelle M.
