Balik Eskwela Program urges MSUans to chase their dreams

 by Nasrimah Sampaco

Balik Eskwela program for MSU students was launched online weeks before the August 22 official class opening of MSU-Main.

Dubbed Somombak Tano sa Pantaw a Mareg, a Meranaw phrase which literally translates to “Let us earn our education or let us be enlightened at the rolling hills”, the campaign started through an online survey in social media where MSUans were asked who was willing to return to MSU-Main in Marawi despite the seemingly-incessant clashes between government forces and ISIS-linked Maute Group that started on May 23.

An initiative of  Director of the Office of Information, Press and Publication Prof. Elin Anisha Guro who is currently on her study leave at the School of Culture and Communications in Australia, the campaign drew a large number of students, muslims and non-muslims, who wanted to come back to the Mindanao State University-Marawi. The campaign was facilitated by Shariah Counselor Aliah Pascan, Director of MSU Shariah Center.

Students who wished to return were offered free transportation ride from Iligan City to the campus. Escorted by the Armed Forces of the Philippines under WestMin Commander Lieutenant General Carlito Galvez and with the full support of MSU System President Dr. Habib Macaayong, more than 600 students were carried by buses arranged by Mathematics Professor, Dr. Salma Marohombsar.

Upon arrival the students were given free Lawanen shirts that bore the name of the campaign “Balik MSU: Somombak Tano sa Pantaw a Mareg” donated by alumni from UK, USA, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Australia.

In a MindaNews report, Prof. Guro said that the free shirts and transportation was a way to entice students to return to campus. Those who participated in the online survey and those who joined the games and trivia received their Lawanen shirts.

Aside from the faculty and staff and university officials, National Youth Commission Chairperson Aiza Seguerra was among those who welcomed the participating students back to the campus.
