It was a tearjerker moment for the Mindanao State University when the result of the July 2017 Licensure Examination for Social Workers was released on August 2 as the armed conflict between government troops and ISIS-inspired Maute Group continued.

Cum laude graduate Paramisuli “Suli” Aming topped the exam with an 86% rating while two others placed 6th and 7th with ratings of 84.40% and 84.20%, respectively. Suli bested the other 5,996 examinees and of this number, 3,951 passed.

“Being the 1st placer gave me the feeling of ambivalence, overjoyed…but also challenged”, Suli said in a speech she gave during the August 20 oathtaking ceremony held in Manila with former DSWD Secretary Judy Taguiwalo as guest speaker.

In the same ceremony, Mindanao State University-Main Campus was awarded a plaque as among the Top 5 performing social work school in the Philippines with 95.85% passing percentage. Out of 241 MSU examinees, 231 passed the licensure exam.

Seventh Placer Elmer Villamucho Jr. recalled how the journey to becoming one of the top 10 was not easy for them. “When [the Marawi siege] happened, we were not able to bring the review materials [from MSU]”, said Elmer who also shared the hurdles they had to undergo in sharing the scarce review materials available.

Armed with their passion to help, the three of them are now professional practitioners in their respective field.

“I feel the urgency of doing the responsibility to be of service to people [in the community]”, said Suli of Tawi-Tawi who is now one of the focal persons for the Kids for Peace Foundation doing a psychosocial support initiative called “Creating Sinag Within”. She said she hopes to rebuild the lives of her Moro and non-Moro brothers and sisters who have been displaced by the siege.

As for Elmer, engaging with the marginalized youth sector gives him “so much joy” through his involvement with the Municipal Social Welfare Office in Lingig, Surigao del Sur.

Sixth Placer and cum laude graduate Catherine Caulawon is now affiliated with DSWD CARAGA as a community facilitator for the KALAHI-CIDDS National Community-Driven Development Project assigned in Trento, Agusan del Sur.

‘Future Plan’

Both Suli and Catherine lean to pursuing law school in the future. According to Catherine, ”...becoming a lawyer with [a] social work background share the same values of defending human rights”.

While the two women share the same future interests, Elmer, on the other hand, wants to extend his field work practice for five years and share his experiences once he joins the academe. Elmer also hopes to pursue post-grad degrees abroad and do research and eventually publish a book.

During the 56th Founding Anniversary Celebration of MSU on Sept 1, Suli, Catherine and Elmer were each awarded cash incentives from the university worth 20,000, 15,000 and 14,000, respectively.

Dean Violeta Engracia of the College of Public Affairs expressed her gratitute to the topnotchers for bringing honor to the Mindanao State University saying how she is ”elated and so much grateful for they have brought to MSU another feather on the cap”.
