Yogyakarta, Indonesia —Furthering the internationalization initiatives of the Mindanao State University (MSU), the College of Law has entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Faculty of Law of the Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) on October 9.

The historic partnership of MSU Law and UMY Law was fully supported by University President Atty. Paisalin P.D. Tago, CPA and Dean Prof. Norhabib Bin Suod S. Barodi, Ll.M., who personally witnessed and signed the MOA at the Signing Ceremony at the Fachruddin A Building at the UMY Yogyakarta campus.

Meanwhile, UMY and its Faculty of Law were represented during the signing by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Slamet Riyadi, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D. and Prof. Iwan Satriawan, S.H., MCL, Ph.D., UMY’s Vice Rector for Quality, Reputation and Partnership and Dean of the Faculty of Law, respectively. Assoc. Prof. Yordan Gunawan, S.H., MBA, M.H, Ph.D., Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs; Assoc. Prof. Yanik Prasetyoningsih, S.H., M.H., Ph.D., Vice Dean for Human Resources and other officials were also present and expressed their full support during the signing ceremony.

The MOA lays down the framework for the student and faculty exchange between the two law schools, including the potential development of a joint degree program that will both benefit aspiring future Sharia legal professionals of the Philippines and Indonesia, through MSU and UMY.

During the roundtable discussion, Assoc. Prof. Atty. Datu Esma Mikee P. Maruhom, Assistant Dean of the MSU Law Tawi-Tawi Extension expressed the College’s intention to develop joint degree programs, both short and professional courses for both UMY and MSU. University President Tago also expressed his intention to sign a MSU systemwide MOA with UMY in order to expand this growing partnership with one of Indonesia’s leading universities to the other MSU constituent units.

Prof. Atty. Norhabib Bin Suod Barodi gave a short briefer on the special mandate of the MSU and the College of Law under the context of the pacification and mainstreaming efforts of the Philippine government for Mindanao. After the signing ceremony, Dean Barodi delivered a public lecture to the UMY Law international students on “Islamic Law in the Philippines: A Legal Perspective through the Bangsamoro Lens.”
