MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Professor Harvey Niere, Associate Peace Research Officer of the Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM) at Mindanao State University (MSU) Marawi City, was an onsite participant at the 4th National Peace Education Summit held at the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria in Ortigas.
The summit’s agenda featured a series of important sessions dedicated to fostering peace and reconciliation. A key highlight was the panel discussion titled “Knitting Peace in the Algorithm: Navigating Digital Peacebuilding in the Age of [Panel Moderator: Dr. Dan Jefferson B. Lopez, OIC-President, Calaca City Global College].” The panel included prominent figures such as Col. Francel Margareth Padilla-Taborlupa, Spokesperson of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and Ms. Bai Rohaniza Sumndad-Usman, Founding President and Executive Director of the Teach Peace Build Peace Movement.
High-ranking officials delivered messages and solidarity speeches throughout the day, including Secretary Carlito G. Galvez, Jr., Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (PAPRU), and H.E. Ambassador Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja, Executive Director of the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (A-IPR). The summit also saw the unveiling of the foundational course offerings of the Philippine Peace Institute (PPI) by its Executive Director, Andres S. Aguinaldo, Jr.
Prof. Niere’s colleagues from MSU Marawi City, Dr. Aliah P. Cali-Pascan, Peace Action Officer, and Dr. Khayronesak Abbas, Associate Peace Action Officer, also attended the event online.
The day concluded with a “Commitment to Peace” session for all participants and a solidarity dinner.
