MARAWI CITY — Mindanao State University (MSU) in close collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology and Province of Lanao Del Sur convened a diverse group of environmental experts, local leaders, and community members today, May 13, at the Provincial Social Hall for a critical community consultation.
The forum focused on Project 6, titled “Sociocultural and Economic Dimensions of Resource Conservation and Management of Endemic Cyprinids in Lake Lanao.” By bringing together various sectors, the university aims to bridge the gap between scientific research and the lived experiences of the people whose livelihoods depend on the lake’s unique biological heritage.
A key highlight was the presentation of the PESTLE analysis findings by Prof. Norjannah Abantas-Manalocon, which detailed the political, economic, and social factors currently influencing the management of the lake’s endemic fish species.
As the program transitioned into the afternoon, the focus shifted from presentation to active collaboration. Dr. Nimfa L. Bracamonte facilitated a hands-on SWOT workshop where participants identified the internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as external opportunities and threats, regarding resource conservation.
The event concluded on a high note with a formal “Pledge of Commitment” signing, where stakeholders and partner agencies solidified their dedication to the project’s long-term goals. Certificates were awarded to participants in recognition of their contributions to the dialogue. Prof. Melencio C. Jalova, Jr., Director of the University Extension Services-Ranaw Sustainability and Resiliency Center, delivered the closing message, emphasizing that the protection of Lake Lanao’s cyprinids is not just an ecological necessity, but a vital preservation of the region’s cultural and economic identity.
